Writing and research

Emlyn Stam’s artistic research explores the relationship between historical listening, performance practice and contemporary interpretation. His PhD research project In Search of a Lost Language: Performing in Early-Recorded Style in Viola and String Quartet Repertoires investigated how early recordings can reveal alternative approaches to musical expression and interpretation.

His research focuses on late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century performance traditions and the ways in which musical memory is transmitted, transformed and reinvented. He regularly gives lectures and lecture-recitals at international institutions, connecting historical research with practical performance.
